SUMMARY:Cordata Housing Co-operative - Green Open Homes 2018
DESCRIPTION:Cordata Housing Co-operative are opening their home as a part of Carbon Co-op’s Green Open Homes Weekend\, 29th and 30th September 2018.\nThe house is unique in that it is occupied by a registered co-operative group of 6 people\, the purchase and refurbishment funded with a mortgage from Ecology Building Society\, proving the viability of developing low energy house refurbishments for groups of people on a rental basis.\nThe historic building fabric was treated sensitively when designing the refurbishment programme\, and the needs of the housing co-op and its members were taken into account.\nhttp://withington.coopliving.net/\nEnergy efficiency measures installed:\n\nComplete envelope insulation: double thickness roof\, underfloor\, external and internal walls\,\nDouble glazed sashes + encapsulated original stained glass\nLED lights + Eco washing machine and drying cabinet\nHigh spec heating – Separate floor-by-floor system\nSolar hot water tank heating\nSolar PV 2.4Kw\n3000 litre rainwater tank for toilet flushing + low flow rate taps\nRecycled wood fibre external insulation\nLeased by a co-operative committed to low waste and shared resources\n\nCordata think you should visit their home because:We believe we make a larger overall energy saving\, because 6 people live there. We also made use of almost every energy saving method available at the time of the refurbishment\, whilst preserving the character of the house. We think we are one of only a few ( or possibly the only) multiple occupancy houses in the country that have had a complete eco refurbishment from the ground up.Energy saving:\nAbout 40-50% less than an equivalent houseToursSaturday 29th September\, 10am – 4pm – tours on the hour  Please book!\nAccessibility and travel\n\nNearest public transport: buses to Palatine Road\, Burton Road tram\nParking on street: free at weekends\nAccessibility issues: steps at front and rear\n\nMany thanks to Ecology Building Society for supporting this event.

DESCRIPTION:Ruth is opening her home as a part of Carbon Co-op’s Green Open Homes Weekend\, 29th and 30th September 2018.\nRuth Shepherd’s Mid terrace 1880s was cold and draughty before she decided she wanted to make home improvements. She’d lived in the house 10 years before making major changes in 2013. During the 5 years before\, She had had double glazing and composite front and back doors installed. The cavity wall in the 1970s bathroom extension had also been done then. It was looking over the Eco house at Miles Platting and then visiting SuperHome owner Eric Fewster (see Hersey St\, Salford) that made her determined get her house revamped. The work was carried out by Eric (www.ColdProof.co.uk) and Bob Hope of Expert Home Extensions (www.experthomeextensions.co.uk).\nSee more here: www.coldproof.co.uk\n \nEnergy efficiency measures installed:\n\nCondensing boiler\nDouble Glazing\nDraught-proofing\nFloor Insulation\nInternal Wall Insulation\nLoft Insulation\nLow Energy Lighting\nMechanical Ventilation Heat Recovery\nWater Saving Devices\n\n \nRuth thinks you should visit her home because:\nThis is a small\, terraced property i.e. you don’t have to have a big place to make improvements!ToursSaturday 29th September\, 10am – 4pm – tours on the hour  (except 1pm)\nAccessibility and travel\n\nNearest public transport: Mauldeth Road rail station\, buses 25\, 50\, 178\, 179\nParking: Not brilliant but use Co-op carpark! \nAccessibility: Steep\, narrow stairs and step at front door\n\n\n\nMany thanks to Ecology Building Society for supporting this event.

SUMMARY:Green Open Homes Tour - September 2018
DESCRIPTION:Visit inspiring eco-homes!\nFREE\nThis bus tour is a part of Carbon Co-op’s Green Open Homes Weekend\, 29th and 30th September 2018.\nJoin us for an inspiring day of eco-home visits\, meet and speak to people who’ve retrofitted their homes and find out what’s possible. \nWe will start the day in th Yard Theatre for a Carbon Co-op workshop: Beginner’s Guide to Retrofit. Aneaka Kellay and Jonathan Atkinson will explore what we mean when we talk about energy efficiency and retrofit. We will explore basic ideas and concepts\, and help you think through questions to consider when visiting eco-homes on the bus tour.\nWe will provide a free lunch and then head off on the tour!\nThe bus trip will stop at two Carbon Co-op member homes:\nAlan and Monica\nAlan and Monica have just completed a full refurbishment of their house which has included a number of measures to reduce energy consumption\, make the house more thermally efficient and reduce their carbon footprint. They have employed experienced contractors\, but not ones that are specialists in those particular areas. After a lot of consideration Alan and Monica decided not to go for EWI or MVHR and this was based on positive decisions around their home use patterns and desires\, rather than due to finance.\nJohn and Pauline\nJohn and Pauline have retrofitted their 1930’s semi to EnerPHit standards\, with very high levels of airtightness\, EWI\, triple glazing and MVHR. A driving concern has been the creation of a demonstration project to tackle climate change in old houses\, and to convert the house to make it suitable for their retirement. They will continue to record energy usages\, temperature and humidity and will make the data available to interested parties.\nBoth homes were the subject of a Carbon Co-op social in October 2017. See here for an audio recording and presentations here: https://carbon.coop/blog/aneaka/tale-three-retrofits\n\nDetails\nWHAT\nIntroductory workshop + Eco-home bus tour\nWHEN\nSaturday 29th Septembr 2018\n**Updated agenda**\n10:30 – 11:30  Workshop: Beginners Guide to Retrofit\n11:30 – 12:10 FREE brunch \n12:20 – 17:00 Eco-home Bus Tour\nCome along for the whole day or just the bus tour.\nWHERE\nWorkshop: The Yard Theatre\, Work for Change\, Hulme.\nBus tour: Meet outside The Yard Theatre at 12:30 pm\nCOST\nFree\, spaces limited so book early to avoid disappointment.\n\nMany thanks to Ecology Building Society for supporting this event.

SUMMARY:Andy and Sue - Green Open Home Tour 2018
DESCRIPTION:Andy and Sue are opening their home as a part of Carbon Co-op’s Green Open Homes Weekend\, 29th and 30th September 2018. \nBank Nook is an idilic site and an inspiring project – it’s well worth a visit!\nAndy and Sue have been creating a sustainable\, comfortable and beautiful home for over 40 years. They have thought carefully about how to use the natural resources on their land to create energy and keep warm! They have taken care of the natural environment\, managed water\, solar and land resources while maintaining a low carbon foorprint and increasing biodiversity.\nAndy is a fountain of knowledge and always happy to discuss energy efficiency and sustainability. More recently he has learnt lots about managing water resources due to the summer drought. \nBank Nook is a detached 1750 stone built cottage\, 250 metres high on West Pennine Hills\, 115 sq metres. \nSee more about the project on this video: Andy Hamilton – 38 Years in to a 40 Year Project\nTimeline\n\n1977-1979 2000 trees planted. Now yielding over a ton of firewood each year and rich ecology. Natural water supply developed. Improved 1994 and 2013.\n1977-1995 Insulation on East side of the house\, Conservatory built on south side for solar gain\, etc\n1995 Installed water source Heat Pump with underfloor heating beneath stone flags\n2009 Highly insulated extension built on North side\n2010 Installed Air Source Heat Pump (£6\,000 approx)\n2011 Installed PV panels on purpose built shed with integrated Greenhouse\n2012 – 14 Pavadentro and Hemp Lime insulation installed on West Side (£6\,000 for 30 sq metres).\n\nNow close to carbon neutral for heating if 2\,000 kWhrs from PV panels taken into consideration. Performance of Heat Pump measured by Mitsubishi\, as Bank Nook is a Mitsubishi test site. Full details in paper\, and presentation by Andy Hamilton\, and energy audit by Nick Parsons.\n\nTours:\nSunday 30th September – drop in open all day. Please let Andy know when you plan to arrive via the booking form. \n\nTravel information\nFind detailed travel instructions here.\nAccessibility\nThis home is not wheelchair accessible.\n\nMany thanks to Ecology Building Society for supporting this event.

SUMMARY:John and Pauline - Green Open Homes 2018
DESCRIPTION:John and Pauline are opening their home as a part of Carbon Co-op’s Green Open Homes Weekend\, 29th and 30th September 2018.\nVisit this inspiring eco-home that has pulled out all the stops to become as energy efficient and future proof as possible. This EnerPHit conversion has achieved very high energy savings with an estimated saving of 90% on gas bills. \n\nEnergy efficiency measures installed:\n\nEnerPHit conversion includes insulated concrete floor\, cavity wall\, ext wall & loft insulation\nTriple Glazing\nLighting systems and electrical appliances – LEDs + induction hob\nVaillant condensing boiler + micro-bore pipes to hot taps to reduce heat-loss from “dead legs.”\nBrink Mechanical Ventilation and Heat Recovery + recovery of 85% heat from exhaust gases\nConsumer unit with expansion capability for future PV\nHigher capacity gutters + down-pipes + water butts + soak-aways\nTimber windows\, doors\, architraves\, skirting & window boards\nGood air-tightness to meet EnerPHit requirement.\n\n\nJohn and Pauline think you should visit their home because: \nOur house was a typical 1930s\, semi-detached\, ex-council house that had had the wrong things done in the wrong order to it since the last tenant bought it. The 1930s was a peak house-building period\, so many people could copy what we did or do better. We will help other people who wish to do something similar.\n\nTours\n\nSaturday 29th September bus tour  – book separately here\nSunday 30th September tours available 2 – 5 pm\n\n\nAccessibility and travel\n\nNearest public transport: Radclliffe & Whitefield tram stations; 98 bus stops at the end of Hollinhurst Road\nParking: Yes\, but limited. We are near the end of a cul de sac.\nAccessibility: Door is 7 steps up from the pavement.\n\n\nMany thanks to Ecology Building Society for supporting this event.
