SUMMARY:Info Night: Construction Contracts - sign on the dotted line?
DESCRIPTION:Engaging a contractor in building works\, ordering materials for your retrofit project or making a verbal agreement with a builder? Then you are entering into a contract! But do you know your rights\, and if there is something in writing do you read every word before signing on the dotted line?   “You can agree to almost anything in your contracts… in theory. However\, laws can interfere with that freedom. Just because a term is written into a contract doesn’t mean you are bound by it.” (https://500words.co.uk/the-dotted-line-anything-almost/) At this Carbon Co-op Info Night\, Sarah Fox (500 words) will be joining us to shine a light on construction contract basics – what to look for\, what to look out for\, and what your rights are. Sarah is a contract specialist who advocates for simple contracts of just 500 words to build trust and avoid disputes. Find out more at www.500words.co.uk \nThe evening is a great opportunity for householders planning retrofit works or other domestic construction projects to get their questions on contracts answered. Contractors are also welcome! \nShare your stories! \nWe’re also looking to hear about YOUR experience of contracts – have you been asked to agree to terms you’ve found unreasonable? Have you not received a contract until work had started and found yourself in breach of the contract through no fault of your own? Whether you can join us for the evening or not\, please email marion@carbon.coop in advance and we’ll ask for Sarah’s take on them so we can all learn from each others’ experiences – and if you want to keep your questions anonymous\, that’s fine!\nBooking is essential.\nAdditional information\n\nWheelchair accessible\nNearest train station Manchester Oxford Road (5 mins walk)\, Manchester Piccadilly (10mins walk)\nNearest tram stop: St Peter’s Square\nNearest car park: NCP Car Park Manchester Chorlton Street

SUMMARY:Longsight Home Energy Party!
DESCRIPTION:You are invited to Equinox Housing Co-op’s home improvement house party! \nThis is a house party with a difference.\nCarbon Co-op members Aneaka is inviting her friends and neighbours in Longsight\, Levenshulme and Burnage\, to find out how we can improve our homes\, making them warmer and more healthy. \nWith the help of expert Energy Surveyor Diane Hubbard of Green Footsteps\, we will be hunting for draughts and cold areas of the house\, identifying energy improvements and outlining how to go about making them.\nUsing ‘blower door’ equipment (a big fan on the front door) to pull air into the house\, we will play ‘Hunt the Draughts’. A ‘semi-competitive’ game 🙂 in which teams will explore the house and compete to find the most draughty bits of the house (and there are likely to be a few!). \nDiane will be on hand to discuss what can be done to improve draughty and cold homes and there will be opportunities to ask questions and share tips. \nAdditional info:\n\nFood and refreshments will be provided. On street parking available\nThe house is not wheelchair accessible. A ramp into the house could be built on request.

SUMMARY:Carbon Co-op Info Night: Heating and Ventilation
DESCRIPTION:Many of our members have questions about heating systems and ventilation – what works? What is suitable for different house types? How do heating systems and ventilation interact?\nOur approach to retrofit is fabric first – but what is second? Thinking through the way we heat and ventilate our homes is essential to effective whole house retrofit\, and ensuring that we are warm and have good indoor air quality.\nOlder homes were built to be draughty as a way of managing damp and indoor air quality\, but that makes them cold and expensive to heat. As we draught proof our homes and make them warm and cosy\, having a ventilation strategy that is compatible with our heating strategy and the building’s fabric becomes increasingly important.\nWe will be joined by three professionals with different areas of expertise: Peter King (Aereco\, Ventilation Manufacturer)\, Richard Shears (Snug Spaces\, Heating Engineer)\, and Jim Wild (LEDA\, Building Services Engineer). \nSpeakers will present drawing on their expertise in whole house building design\, heating system installation and ventilation system design.  To get the warmed up and focused on what you want to know about\, please post your questions on social media ahead of the event. \nFood will be provided. Booking is essential.\nAGENDA\n\n6.00pm – Arrival\, tea & coffee\n6.15pm – Introductions \n6.20pm – Speaker presentations\n7.20pm – Discussion\n7.50pm – Food and socialising\n8.30pm – Ends\n\nThis event has been sponsored by Aereco.\n\n\nSpeaker biographies\nJim Wild (LEDA\, Building Services Engineer)\nJim is an expert in Building Services Engineering and a Chartered Engineer and Director for LEDA. He works with a holistic view and human centred approach on all projects. At LEDA we are dedicated to creating excellent buildings that work. We provide advice and design at all stages of the construction life cycle and work collaboratively across disciplines to achieve financially viable\, lean and environmentally sustainable solutions. Currently we are working on single domestic dwelling refurbishments\, new build low energy and Passive House projects\, large refurbishments and new new build for private and local authority customers. \nRichard Shears (Snug Spaces\, Heating Engineer)\nRichard’s background is in plumbing and heating\, which he’s been involved with for over 10yrs. As he’s gained knowledge and experience he has moved more towards low energy retrofit and installing systems that suit the needs of low energy homes. Richard has also added energy assessment to his skills\, and more recently AECB Retrofit Co-ordinator qualifications.\nRichard started Snug Spaces as a way of providing a more rounded approach to retrofit. We are a small team of installers and subcontractors that provide guidance and advice to the homeowner and showing them a pathway to lowering their energy use. We focus on actual delivery and installation of energy efficiency measures\, quite often helping homeowners with single elements but also right through to whole house retrofits\, it isn’t always possible to plan a complete refurbishment of the home in one go.\nPeter King (Aereco\, Ventilation specialist)\nPeter King is a ventilation specialist with over 6 years’ experience at Aereco.
