SUMMARY:Gaseous Domesticities Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Discover the history of gas industry communications and what we can learn for retrofit and the renewable transition.\n\n\nJoin this co-production workshop based on Sam Johnson-Schlee’s British Academy Innovation Fellowship research findings. The workshop will discuss how this research can inform new approaches to communicating with householders about energy adaptation and retrofit. \nThe workshop will introduce three data sets: \n\n Archival research into the historic advertisement and comms regarding gas and heating \nMachine Learning media analysis carried out by the research agency Space Doctors\nQualitative analysis of research with 13 householders \n\nThrough workshop exercises we will explore this data and identify implications and guidelines for how to communicate to householders about adaptation and retrofit. \nA taster of the research: \nOne of the key themes in the research is the enduring positivity surrounding domestic gas for many householders. Remarkably contemporary views appear to echo British Gas messaging from the 20th century. \nInterviewees: “I like to use gas for cooking as firstly it’s what I am used to \, I believe it is cheaper than electric \, easier to cook with as it more controllable\, you can adjust the flame to your requirements\, it is visible which makes it far more user friendly than electric.” \nInterviewee: “I like gas cooking because I can see the flames and it’s easy to set the heat I want\, and the heat level adapts quickly on the turn of the knob.” \n1962 Communications strategy document: “If young householders are to be prevented from going all electric\, the Gas industry must fight on what the agents regard as its strongest ground speedy heat for cooking\, with heat for space and water heating following naturally.” \nBelow Advert from 1965 promising ‘control’ and ‘obedience’ from gas:

SUMMARY:Retrofit Calderdale: Air Tightness and DIY Measures Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Are you a Calderdale resident interested in learning more about home retrofit? Join us in this workshop to learn about air tightness!\n\n\nAbout the workshop\nOur second workshop focuses on ‘air tightness’ and DIY measures\, on how we can stop losing heat from around the home – through gaps and leaky walls\, open chimneys and flues\, and cold draughts\, and how we can make sure we can breath though ventilation and avoid damp and moulds! How we can apply DIY measures and when we may need to call in expert help.  \nDuring the session\, you will: \n\nLearn how to identify draughts around your home\nGet familiar with DIY draught proofing materials and techniques to tackle common draughts around your home\nLearn about ventilation\, the importance of managing moisture and air quality in your home and how to balance this with airtightness measures\n\nThere will also be a practical activity: using various simple techniques to hunt down draughts in the venue\, and figure out which of the demonstration materials may be suitable for fixing that draught. \nAbout the project\nThis workshop series is for householders interested in learning more about the basics of retrofit\, applying this to your home and sharing knowledge and learning with other local residents. \nCarbon Co-op’s Retrofit Calderdale project\, in collaboration with Pennine Community Power\, aims to empower residents in Todmorden to explore the possibilities of retrofitting their homes\, creating cosier spaces\, reducing energy bills\, and improving the efficiency of their homes through knowledge sharing\, workshop events\, and technology. \nLocaltion\nWe will be meeting at Todmorden College in one of their rooms. We are keen to protect everyone’s health as much as we can\, therefore we will be providing face masks and sanitiser\, and welcome and support anyone to use these during the session. We have placed an upper limit of 35 places to ensure we have plenty of space\, and everyone can take part in the activities. Booking is essential for attendance! \nComing up\nWe have planned two more workshops after this event\, scheduled between April and June\, covering topics such as Retrofit and Flooding; and Home Energy Assessments. Subscribe to our Eventbrite organisation page to be alerted of these and other future workshops and events. \nPlease note: These workshops are aimed at householders who want to learn more about retrofit. This is not a workshop for people working in the supply chain or seeking to promote a specific product or service – we will ask salespeople to leave the session.

SUMMARY:Retrofit Calderdale: Flooding and Retrofit
DESCRIPTION:Are you a Calderdale resident interested in learning more about home retrofit? Join us in this workshop to learn about flooding & retrofit!\n\n\nAbout the workshop\nOur third workshop looks at the link between flooding and retrofit – why it’s important\, what can be done to make our homes more resilient and how a community approach can be powerful. \nDuring the session\, you will: \n\nLearn about the impact of flooding on homes \nLearn the difference between resistance and resilience measures\nLearn how retrofit and flood resilience can be combined\nHear examples of community level responses to flooding and how we might protect our homes \nUnderstand which organisations provide further advice in relation to flooding and homes. \n\nThere will also be a practical activity: we will look at some maps of the area\, explore different types of flood risk and add your local knowledge. \nLocation\nWe will be meeting at Todmorden College in one of their rooms. SUMMARY:Retrofit Calderdale: Home Energy Assessments
DESCRIPTION:Are you a Calderdale resident interested in learning more about home retrofit? Join us in this workshop to learn about home assessments.\n\n\nAbout the workshop\nIn our fourth and final workshop we will firstly look at Home Energy Assessments\, what they are and what they involve; what information and knowledge about our homes they provide us and how we can use them to help us plan for undertaking retrofit works. \nTogether we will: \n\nLearn about Carbon Coop Home Energy Assessments \nUnderstand what it’s involved in undertaking a Home Energy Assessment\nLook at examples of Home Energy Assessment reports and how the householders have/are/will implement the recommendations\nDiscuss how a Home Energy Assessment and its report can help engage designers and contractors when planning your own retrofit \n\nWe will then use the latter part of the workshop to discuss together what the next steps may look like for Calderdale Retrofit as a group of interested householders who have been attending these workshops. We will run some hands-on activities to help us gather thoughts and feedback together. \nLocation\nWe will be meeting at Todmorden College in one of their rooms.
