We’ve now reached the end of [REScoop VPP](https://www.rescoopvpp.eu/) – a 3 year project testing the system in the houses of energy co-operative members in Belgium\, Spain\, Germany\, France and the UK. \nWith the end of project\, we are free to revisit the tech stack and our aspirations for device control to support domestic flexibility. SUMMARY:EcoHome Lab: Using CO2 data to quantify ventilation rate
DESCRIPTION:*** \nWe are extremely pleased to be joined by Dr. Jess Few (UCL) and Trystan Lea (Open Energy Monitor) to discuss the potential of CO2 sensing to quantify ventilation rates in domestic properties. \nJess – is now a Research Fellow specialising in UK household energy consumption\, but during her PhD she developed a method for measuring ventilation rates in occupied homes\, based on the tracer gas decay technique. As part of the research she developed algorithms to identify periods when a dwelling is unoccupied and then identify and analyse periods of CO2 decay for ventilation rate analysis – this code is all released under an open source license. \nTrystan – Is co-founder of Megni & OEM\, who not only builds a variety of tools to model\, plan and measure domestic decarbonisation but uses his own house as a case study. For the last few months Trystan has been experimenting with adding CO2 tracking to his monitoring system to track air change rates within Emoncms. He’ll take us through his results so far and how others might replicate it. \nThis is a really live area of research and exploration\, so there will be plenty of time for discusssion\, if you’re working on your own experiments please do come along and share your findings. \nIn our regular monthly slot – every second Thursday of the month – EHL is a hangout for people taking control of their home energy usage and generation. The planned reductions of at least 40% in energy consumption has been achieved and exceeded. This has ensured that my carbon footprint has fallen significantly as well. I worked as a lecturer in education in Manchester and was also a Councillor in Salford for 15 years. In that time\, I have helped set up a number of groups and many are working on environmental and community projects to this day. Over the last few years I have devoted time to helping set up carbon reduction and solar energy schemes in my local area.” \nChris Medrano – “I have c35 years experience in the social housing sector. I’m really interested in the work that the carbon co-op do\, put simply it is the future. Whilst RSL’s have been improving homes and reducing reliance on carbon\, I do not think it is moving quickly enough\, for our customers or for our planet. We are making headway on new builds to higher specification\, but retrofit is much more difficult. I’d like the opportunity to explore and better understand what the blockages are from all perspectives and be part of a team trying to resolve these issues so that this type of essential work becomes mainstream.” \nRichard Amos – “I have self-built an AECB level retrofit on my own property and have significant technical and practical knowledge in this area. I also work for a startup specialising in corporate sustainability and have considerable interest in policy/system driven change. I would like to hep provide my experience and skills in helping define pragmatic but impactful ways to help retrofitting in a sustainable way that grows the skillset of trades and takes it out of the realm of only being truly possible with (a lot of) money\, or (a lot of) personal time.” \nGraham Lock – “My business runs the UK’s largest retrofit network and stages regional retrofits summits across the UK. SUMMARY:Levenshulme Area-Based Retrofit Scheme
DESCRIPTION:Learn about the processes and ways of working that underpin this innovative retrofit scheme.\n\n\nCarbon Co-op are leading this innovative place-based pilot\, aiming to bring opportunities for retrofit into communities on a tenure-blind basis\, by addressing some of the barriers and challenges currently facing households. \nActing as an intermediary\, Carbon Coop have aggregated retrofit professionals and partnered with a social enterprise training/contractor on behalf of participating households\, engaging local people through participatory community liaison. They are facilitated a blended finance package\, mixing grant and zero percent municipal lending tailored to householder circumstances. \nThis webinar brings together a panel of key players from the scheme to explore their experience of the process to date\, now that works are on site. \nNB: all the households in the current scheme are owner occupied\, but place based approaches involving public and private tenants are equally applicable. \n \nWho should attend?\nThis event is suitable for anyone with an interest in place-based or area-based approaches to retrofit delivery. She has recently led a Skills Needs Analysis for Historic England assessing skills needs\, gaps and shortages for construction\, repair and maintenance of pre-1919 buildings\, including skills and qualifications needed for retrofit. \n \nPanel members\n\nJonathan Atkinson\, Co-founder – Carbon Co-op \nJonathan is a co-founder of Carbon Co-op\, a board member and staff member\, developing and project managing innovative\, new low carbon projects. He is the Retrofit Lead at the organisation\, overseeing a wide range of energy efficiency projects. Jonathan’s earlier career included time at two research co-ops and in 2002 he co-founded UHC Collective\, a multidisciplinary art and design project. He splits his time with People Powered Retrofit where he is Business Director. \n \nAneaka Kellay\, Citizen and Community Engagement Lead – Carbon Co-op \nAneaka works in the Retrofit Team and Energy Commons Team at Carbon Co-op. She is experienced in workshop development\, facilitation and community engagement. She is passionate about social and environmental justice. Over the last 9 years\, she has worked to engage and organise training for householders and contractors around retrofit. Her current area of interest is in people-centred approaches to energy-efficient schemes. \n \nMichael Dickinson\, Director – B4Box Ltd \nB4Box are an award-winning construction training provider and employer who work differently. Their unique integrated business model puts local learners and skilled employees at the heart of all business decisions\, shaped and informed by their core values: tackling poverty\, addressing climate change\, promoting social justice and addressing inequalities. B4Box won the Ashden Award for Low Carbon Skills in 2022. \n \nHannah Dixon\, Director\, Architect\, Certified Passivhaus Designer\, AECB Certifier – Progress in Practice \nHannah is a chartered Architect and Certified Passivhaus Designer\, specialising in sustainable\, low carbon construction and community engagement. She has a wide range of experience working on Passivhaus and low energy schemes\, as both Project Architect and Passivhaus Consultant. \n \nJulie Maxwell\, Architect and Retrofit Coordinator – Progress in Practice \nJulie is a qualified architect who moved to the UK in 2015. She has a wealth of experience delivering divers residential projects from deep whole house retrofits to high performance new builds in Sheffield Yorkshire and the wider region.
