DESCRIPTION:*** \nWe are very pleased to host **Colin Meek** of [RB&M](https://www.r-b-m.com/) who will be presenting his latest work on UK in-situ heat pump performance. Colin’s review of the latest Ofgem Data (2017–2022) is currently pending publication by DESNZ and follows on from [his previous analysis of domestic installations in over 2\,000 homes (2021)](https://www.recc.org.uk/pdf/performance-data-research-focused.pdf). \nWhile we regularly spotlight high-performing\, specialist heat pump installations\, as the sectors moves beyond the early adopters this is a good opportunity to calibrate the overall level of performance being achieved. \n======================================= \nNow in our regular monthly slot – every second Thursday of the month. DESCRIPTION:Join us for an in-person training session on retrofit – perfect for householders interested in retrofit.\n\n\nWelcome to the Beginner’s Guide to Retrofit and Heat Camera training! \nJoin us at St Margarets Centre (on Brantingham Road) for an in-person event where you’ll learn all about the basics of retrofitting your home. \nWe will help you establish a basic understanding of eco-renovation and how you might go about planning to make your home warmer\, more comfortable and that little bit greener whilst reducing bills. \nWe’ll discuss both DIY and contractor-led approaches\, this is very much a starting point for retrofit rather than an in-depth discussion of the technical aspects but we will be introducing a new support programme with follow on training and assistance. \nWe’ll end the with some tips on how you can tell friends and neighbours about what you’ve learnt about retrofit. \nSuitable for people thinking about or actively planning retrofit improvements. \nLess suitable for social housing tenants who are reliant on their housing provider to make these changes. \n\n\n\nThis event is part of Energise Manchester\, a 2 year programme of advice\, support and assistance delivered by Carbon Co-op in partnership with People Powered Retrofit\, to help people in South Manchester plan and carry out energy improvements to their homes. \nEnergise Manchester is part of the Local Energy Advice Demonstrator programme\, funded by the UK Government Department for Energy Security and Net Zero.

SUMMARY:EcoHome Lab: Calculating Metered Energy Savings (MES) from retrofit
DESCRIPTION:*** \nThis session will focus on the latest work on the development of [Metered Energy Savings](https://carbon.coop/2024/02/retrometer-project-why-metered-energy-savings/) (MES) methodologies to calculate the impact of energy efficiency interventions in the UK. MES approaches compare energy usage post-retrofit with a “counterfactual” – the energy the household *would have used* in the same period had the retrofit not happened. \nWe’re pleased to be joined by **Connor Galbraith\, Data Scientist at [Energy Systems Catapult](https://es.catapult.org.uk/project/retrometer/)** who has been leading the work on how this Counterfactual is generated in the recent [RetroMeter](https://es.catapult.org.uk/project/retrometer/) project. Most of my working life has been in the co-operative sector and I’ve been involved as a founder or board member of 6 co-operatives / social enterprises which are still operating in the city. I’d like to continue in my role to help maintain the organisation memory.” \nPeter Livesey – “I’ve been a board member since 2019\, I’ve had a long career running my own business and providing services to financial service organisations. I’m keen to continue supporting Carbon Co-op’s work.” \nMichael Hemingway – “I support the Carbon Co-op model\, working with like-minded people at grass roots level to bring about change. I am a longstanding member of the board and would like to continue in this role.” \nEddie Sheehy – “My home was retrofitted in 2014 with the scheme fully planned and delivered by Carbon Coop. The planned reductions of at least 40% in energy consumption has been achieved and exceeded. This has ensured that my carbon footprint has fallen significantly as well. I worked as a lecturer in education in Manchester and was also a Councillor in Salford for 15 years. In that time\, I have helped set up a number of groups and many are working on environmental and community projects to this day. Over the last few years I have devoted time to helping set up carbon reduction and solar energy schemes in my local area.” \nChris Medrano – “I have c35 years experience in the social housing sector. I’m really interested in the work that the carbon co-op do\, put simply it is the future. Whilst RSL’s have been improving homes and reducing reliance on carbon\, I do not think it is moving quickly enough\, for our customers or for our planet. We are making headway on new builds to higher specification\, but retrofit is much more difficult. I’d like the opportunity to explore and better understand what the blockages are from all perspectives and be part of a team trying to resolve these issues so that this type of essential work becomes mainstream.” \nRichard Amos – “I have self-built an AECB level retrofit on my own property and have significant technical and practical knowledge in this area. I also work for a startup specialising in corporate sustainability and have considerable interest in policy/system driven change. I would like to hep provide my experience and skills in helping define pragmatic but impactful ways to help retrofitting in a sustainable way that grows the skillset of trades and takes it out of the realm of only being truly possible with (a lot of) money\, or (a lot of) personal time.” \nGraham Lock – “My business runs the UK’s largest retrofit network and stages regional retrofits summits across the UK. SUMMARY:EcoHome Lab: Using CO2 data to quantify ventilation rate
DESCRIPTION:*** \nWe are extremely pleased to be joined by Dr. Jess Few (UCL) and Trystan Lea (Open Energy Monitor) to discuss the potential of CO2 sensing to quantify ventilation rates in domestic properties. \nJess – is now a Research Fellow specialising in UK household energy consumption\, but during her PhD she developed a method for measuring ventilation rates in occupied homes\, based on the tracer gas decay technique. As part of the research she developed algorithms to identify periods when a dwelling is unoccupied and then identify and analyse periods of CO2 decay for ventilation rate analysis – this code is all released under an open source license. \nTrystan – Is co-founder of Megni & OEM\, who not only builds a variety of tools to model\, plan and measure domestic decarbonisation but uses his own house as a case study. For the last few months Trystan has been experimenting with adding CO2 tracking to his monitoring system to track air change rates within Emoncms. He’ll take us through his results so far and how others might replicate it. \nThis is a really live area of research and exploration\, so there will be plenty of time for discusssion\, if you’re working on your own experiments please do come along and share your findings. \nIn our regular monthly slot – every second Thursday of the month – EHL is a hangout for people taking control of their home energy usage and generation. SUMMARY:EcoHome Lab: Viability of battery storage without PV
DESCRIPTION:*** \nWhile self generation is the obvious choice for people wanting to reduce their impact domestically as well improve their energy costs and security it is not an option in all homes. What is the benefit of adding a battery and inverter system to a home without solar PV? With the increased availability of flexible energy tariffs there is the potential to make significant savings on electricity bills. We are interested whether financial savings can offset the initial capital outlay and whether storing less carbon intensive energy is sufficient to offset losses and embedded carbon. \nIn order to take advantage of flexible energy tariffs\, we require a system that: \n* Can switch electrical circuits over to battery power\n* Is relatively simple to retrofit onto an existing domestic supply\n* Has low enough cost that the payoff time is not too excessive (10yr goal)\n* Is automated to take advantage of flexible energy tariffs without user involvement\n* Is robust and simple enough to not require excessive maintenance \nIn this session we will discuss the design and equipment choices of a system that could meet this spec. We aim to touch on all bases such as inverter and battery choice\, integration to existing circuits and control software. DESCRIPTION:Find out about our new PowerShaper Tracker tool\, designed to assist retrofit stakeholders to invest in decarbonising our housing stock.\n\n\nIn this webinar\, Data Analyst James Fenna and Carbon Co-op Retrofit Lead\, Jonathan Atkinson\, set out new and emerging learning from Carbon Co-op’s Metered Energy Savings innovation project\, OpenEnEffs.  \nThe case for evaluation\nIf the UK is to increase private and public investment in energy efficiency\, to support demand reduction for flexibility and to innovate new retrofit services\, a trusted\, robust and accurate approach to calculating energy savings – known as a Metered Energy Savings approach – is required rather than the modelling and guess work used at present. \nThe importance of a Metered Energy Savings approach was set out in this coalition report published by the Green Finance Institute. \nOpen innovation\nCarbon Co-op has been working on a nine months project as part of the InnovateUK Open Digital Solutions to Net Zero innovation programme\, using  smart meter data and the open CalTRACK methodology as a way to quantify energy savings. \nThis webinar\nFind out about Carbon Co-op’s new PowerShaper Tracker tool developed within the project which could in future assist financial institutions and other stakeholders including DNOs\, retrofit providers and Government programmes to invest in the decarbonisation of our housing stock. \nWe will also talk about the broader applications of the technology\, other approaches and the challenges we face in rolling this kind of innovation out at scale. \nThis event is suitable for  \n\npolicy makers\nenergy efficiency practitioners including community energy and one stop shops\nlocal authority officers\nhousing provider staff \ntechnologists\nsoftware architects and; \ninnovation practitioners.

DESCRIPTION:Join us as we cast an eye across the continent and learn about the amazing work our ReScoop VPP partners in Germany are doing with COFYbox.\n\n\nWe are delighted to welcome Christian Weingärtner\, project manager at German energy coop federation Bürgerwerke\, to talk to us about the work they are doing with COFYbox. \nBürgerwerke gathers more than 110 cooperatives througout Germany\, representing over 50\,000 citizens. As an independent green energy supplier\, it supplies citizens with electricity from solar panels\, wind turbines and hydropower plants as well as biogas from plant residues. \nChristian is in charge of implementing the German ReScoop VPP pilot sites\, as well as managing everything necessary to successfully carry out the project. He’ll walk us through the work Bürgerwerke has done with the COFYbox.
