SUMMARY:EcoHome Lab: Advising 'accidental' heat pump users
DESCRIPTION:This session will be a bit different to our usual deep dives into data and advanced performance – we’re looking to establish general best practice guidance for less technical audiences. Our primary interest here is in ‘accidental’ rather than ‘enthusiast’ heat pump users\, such as those living in private or social rented homes or those who’ve purchased a property with an existing heat pump and may be struggling. \n* Primary focus is on cost and comfort rather than COP/SPF performance\n* Scheduling tips for heating and hot water\n* Understanding the performance impact of functions (such as quiet mode or power mode)\n* Identifying existing ‘accessible resources’\n* Demystifying user interfaces for heat pump control\n* Is it possible to ‘fit and forget’ or are seasonal adjustments necessary? \nWe’re hoping to have contributions from a few members here\, so whether you’ve practical experience from a personal or professional capacity – get in touch and we’ll add you to the list. \n————————————- \nNow in our regular monthly slot – every second Thursday of the month. A hangout for people taking control of their home energy usage and generation. We focus on open-source hardware and software to gain a better understanding of energy in our homes\, how to make the best use of the energy we generate and reduce energy wasted. \nCatch up on [some of our previous sessions and presentations](https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLiz1gBPXWVAJ4hzg3zj72hVrXVJgWvzOG). \nUnless there’s a specific title to the session\, it means we have no scheduled speaker and it will be an open session. We welcome contributions. \nThis is a [Carbon Co-op](https://carbon.coop/) initiative working close together with the broader open source community. \n**Regular discussion topics include:** \n• Home energy monitoring. \n• House energy performance assessment \n• Sensors – electricity\, gas\, temperature\, humidity\, air quality… \n• User interfaces\, dashboards \n• Smart houses and automation \n• Aggregation of data sources \n• Taking the power back! – Making better use of the surplus power we generate \nWho is it for? \n• Anyone with skills in physical electronics\, web development or programming who wants to use that knowledge to reduce energy and carbon! \n• There will be open space for small groups to focus on adding new sensors or hacking the user interface\, there will always be a ‘newbies’ group for people interested in finding out more.

SUMMARY:EcoHome Lab: Introducing the Home Energy Model (HEM)
DESCRIPTION:RESCHEDULED from February due to illness. \nFor over 30 years the methodology used to gauge the energy and carbon performance of UK buildings has been the Standard Assessment Procedure (SAP)\, but all that is about to change. Over the past few years Government has been working with building professionals to develop the Home Energy Model (HEM) which is due for publication shortly.\nWe are very pleased to be joined by Marianne Heaslip\, the Technical Director of People Powered Retrofit who has been working as part of HEM’s quality assurance and verification team. The session will introduce the key principles of the new methodology\, how it differs from SAP and what that means for how we model buildings to inform regulation (like EPCs) and design. \nSign-up here \n  \n*** \nNow in our regular monthly slot – every second Thursday of the month. SUMMARY:EcoHome Lab: Regional data for accurate carbon footprinting
DESCRIPTION:*** \nAt Ecohome Lab we’re all about the carbon savings\, but how we calculate our carbon can lead to very significant over and under estimates. This can in turn lead us to make retrofit decisions which won’t deliver our desired outcomes. \nIn this session we’ll go through the three valid methodologies for calculating your homes carbon emissions\, their level of accuracy and why the differences between them can be so significant. We’ll also provide you with the datasets to do your own comparison on your own home. \nJoin us here: https://meet.google.com/nwk-njkj-iim

SUMMARY:Fuelling Greater Manchester goes to Stockport Hydro!
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Saturday 11th July when we will visit Stockport Hydro for a guided tour of this incredible Community Energy project. \nStockport Hydro is the first community-owned hydroelectric scheme in Greater Manchester. Construction was completed in May 2012 and by March 2013\, it had already produced 100\,000 units (kWh). \nIt is a real success story in terms of Community Energy and is a leading example of what communities can do when they come together to generate renewable energy. \nWe will be welcomed by Stockport Hydro volunteers at 11am outside the Hydro. In four groups we will then visit: \n\nThe powerhouse – to see the operation of the plant\nThe decking – to see the river flow\, debris collected and wildlife\nThe bank downstream – history\, ownership and community involvement\nThe car park – green energy\, the water cycle\, future plans.\n\nThe visit takes approx 90 minutes\, allowing time for questions. \nThe visit will be followed by an optional picnic in the beautiful grounds of Chadkirk Chapel. Bring your own food and drinks for the picnic. If the weather is inclement\, we will retreat to Dobbies Garden Centre that has a lovely cafe. \nWho should attend\nWe welcome anyone interested in community energy\, those interested in setting up or running similar community energy projects\, those with an interest in tackling climate change and creating new local energy assets or anyone interested in the engineering challenges of small scale hydro and seeing how energy is generated from the power of the River Mersey. \nAdditional information: \nParking: There is no visitor parking on the site. It is possible to park at the Vale Road Car Park – 5 minutes’ walk away and safest place to cross the road. See https://carparkmaps.co.uk/carparks/view/13143 Parking is also available at Dobbies Garden Centre\, across Dooley Lane.\nAddress: Stockport Hydro at Otterspool Weir\, Mill Lane\, Romiley\, Stockport SK6 3LQ \nArriving by train: It is possible to reach Stockport Hydro by train\, arriving at Rose Hill Marple followed by a gentle walk of about 30 minutes (distance is approx 1.3 miles). Email Lorenza at [lorenza@carbon.coop](mailto:lorenza@carbon.coop) if you want to learn more about this option as we will coordinate a group walking from Rose Hill Marple station to the Hydro leaving Rose Hill Marple at 10.30am. \nComfort: Please wear comfortable clothing and shoes. It’s an exposed site on the river\, it can be muddy and cold/wet. \nToilets: The nearest toilets are inside Dobbies Garden Centre. \nThis 2026 series of Fuelling GM events is supported by the Energy Learning Network. Events are organised by Carbon Coop and Greater Manchester Community Renewables. \nLearn more about Stockport Hydro: https://stockport-hydro.co.uk/

SUMMARY:Blueprint Coalition: Burnham\, rewiring the state and local climate action – what next for councils?
DESCRIPTION:After a summer of unprecedented heat\, action by local authorities to mitigate and adapt to climate change has never been more urgent. \nA report recently published by CAG Consultants for the Climate Change Committee has emphasised the importance of local action to reach the Seventh Carbon Budget. But councils face a new operating environment. \nThe Burnham government is prioritising devolution\, with plans for strategic authorities across England by 2028 with promises of new powers and funding for some regional mayors. At the same time\, there is confusion over the future of Local Government Reorganisation (LGR) following the ‘pause’ in September. \nCross-party commitment to local climate action has gone\, with some Reform-led councils cancelling Climate Emergency Declarations and removing the words ‘carbon’ and ‘climate’ related language when updating documents. \nIn this webinar\, we explore the implications of this changed environment for local authority climate action. The webinar will be chaired by Nigel Riglar\, Chair of the Climate Change Board\, ADEPT and Executive Director of Place\, South Gloucestershire Council. \nTopics to be discussed: \n1. What does the Burnham govt mean for local climate action? \n2. The role of local authorities in achieving CCC carbon budgets \n3. The rise of anti-net zero politics and misinformation \nWe have a fantastic line up of speakers\, including: \n– Dan Griffiths\, Head of Low Carbon at Greater Manchester Combined Authority \n– Louise Marix Evans\, co-author of Local Authorities and the Seventh Carbon Budget \n– Edward de Quay\, Policy Analyst\, Grantham Research Institute (London School of Economics) \nThe Blueprint Coalition is a politically neutral\, cross-sector coalition of local government senior professionals\, charities\, civil society and environmental groups\, and climate research institutions. \nBook your (free) place via Zoom link
