SUMMARY:Heat Pump Community Energy Knowledge Sharing Workshop
DESCRIPTION:A webinar for community energy groups on advising householders on the basics on what to look for in procuring air source heat pumps.\n\n\nDomestic heat pumps are a key technology for supporting UK decarbonisation targets\, but there are many misconceptions about how they work and how people can live well with a heat pump. \nCommunity energy groups are uniquely placed to support householders with heat pump adoption\, through unbiased advice and guidance. \nWhat will the workshop entail? \nIn this best practice webinar\, we will hear from Carbon Co-op Project Officer Marlo High and People Powered Retrofit Training Manager Sandy Rushton on how community energy groups can support householders when procuring heat pumps. \nWe will share our findings from research with householders about specifying\, installing\, and living with heat pumps and help you consider how your community organisation can integrate heat pump advice and support into your existing services. \nThe workshop will consist of a presentation and Q&A lasting one hour\, followed by a 30-minute workshop where attendees will take part in an exercise to start identifying the needs of their service users on the topic of heat pumps. \nThe session will be recorded and made available after the event. \nWho is this workshop for? \nThis is aimed at people who work for UK community energy groups\, who have contact with householders or are responsible for managing services. \nYou don’t need in-depth technical knowledge of heat pumps but a bit of basic working knowledge would help. \nOther information \nThis workshop forms part of Carbon Co-op’s Heat Pump Challenge project funded by MCS Charitable Foundation and Electricity North West Powering our Communities Fund. It is free but we accept donations to support our work. \nThis has been organised in collaboration with People Powered Retrofit.

SUMMARY:Gaseous Domesticities Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Discover the history of gas industry communications and what we can learn for retrofit and the renewable transition.\n\n\nJoin this co-production workshop based on Sam Johnson-Schlee’s British Academy Innovation Fellowship research findings. The workshop will discuss how this research can inform new approaches to communicating with householders about energy adaptation and retrofit. \nThe workshop will introduce three data sets: \n\n Archival research into the historic advertisement and comms regarding gas and heating \nMachine Learning media analysis carried out by the research agency Space Doctors\nQualitative analysis of research with 13 householders \n\nThrough workshop exercises we will explore this data and identify implications and guidelines for how to communicate to householders about adaptation and retrofit. \nA taster of the research: \nOne of the key themes in the research is the enduring positivity surrounding domestic gas for many householders. Remarkably contemporary views appear to echo British Gas messaging from the 20th century. \nInterviewees: “I like to use gas for cooking as firstly it’s what I am used to \, I believe it is cheaper than electric \, easier to cook with as it more controllable\, you can adjust the flame to your requirements\, it is visible which makes it far more user friendly than electric.” \nInterviewee: “I like gas cooking because I can see the flames and it’s easy to set the heat I want\, and the heat level adapts quickly on the turn of the knob.” \n1962 Communications strategy document: “If young householders are to be prevented from going all electric\, the Gas industry must fight on what the agents regard as its strongest ground speedy heat for cooking\, with heat for space and water heating following naturally.” \nBelow Advert from 1965 promising ‘control’ and ‘obedience’ from gas:

SUMMARY:Retrofit Calderdale: Home Energy Assessments
DESCRIPTION:Are you a Calderdale resident interested in learning more about home retrofit? Join us in this workshop to learn about home assessments.\n\n\nAbout the workshop\nIn our fourth and final workshop we will firstly look at Home Energy Assessments\, what they are and what they involve; what information and knowledge about our homes they provide us and how we can use them to help us plan for undertaking retrofit works. \nTogether we will: \n\nLearn about Carbon Coop Home Energy Assessments \nUnderstand what it’s involved in undertaking a Home Energy Assessment\nLook at examples of Home Energy Assessment reports and how the householders have/are/will implement the recommendations\nDiscuss how a Home Energy Assessment and its report can help engage designers and contractors when planning your own retrofit \n\nWe will then use the latter part of the workshop to discuss together what the next steps may look like for Calderdale Retrofit as a group of interested householders who have been attending these workshops. We will run some hands-on activities to help us gather thoughts and feedback together. \nAbout the project\nThis workshop series is for householders interested in learning more about the basics of retrofit\, applying this to your home and sharing knowledge and learning with other local residents. \nCarbon Co-op’s Retrofit Calderdale project\, in collaboration with Pennine Community Power\, aims to empower residents in Todmorden to explore the possibilities of retrofitting their homes\, creating cosier spaces\, reducing energy bills\, and improving the efficiency of their homes through knowledge sharing\, workshop events\, and technology. \nLocation\nWe will be meeting at Todmorden College in one of their rooms. We are keen to protect everyone’s health as much as we can\, therefore we will be providing face masks and sanitiser\, and welcome and support anyone to use these during the session. We have placed an upper limit of 35 places to ensure we have plenty of space\, and everyone can take part in the activities. Booking is essential for attendance! \nPlease note: These workshops are aimed at householders who want to learn more about retrofit. This is not a workshop for people working in the supply chain or seeking to promote a specific product or service – we will ask salespeople to leave the session.

SUMMARY:EcoHome Lab: Viability of battery storage without PV
DESCRIPTION:*** \nWhile self generation is the obvious choice for people wanting to reduce their impact domestically as well improve their energy costs and security it is not an option in all homes. What is the benefit of adding a battery and inverter system to a home without solar PV? With the increased availability of flexible energy tariffs there is the potential to make significant savings on electricity bills. We are interested whether financial savings can offset the initial capital outlay and whether storing less carbon intensive energy is sufficient to offset losses and embedded carbon. \nIn order to take advantage of flexible energy tariffs\, we require a system that: \n* Can switch electrical circuits over to battery power\n* Is relatively simple to retrofit onto an existing domestic supply\n* Has low enough cost that the payoff time is not too excessive (10yr goal)\n* Is automated to take advantage of flexible energy tariffs without user involvement\n* Is robust and simple enough to not require excessive maintenance \nIn this session we will discuss the design and equipment choices of a system that could meet this spec. We aim to touch on all bases such as inverter and battery choice\, integration to existing circuits and control software. This session aims to be an open discussion rather than a tutorial so strong opinions from attendees are encouraged. \nNow in our regular monthly slot – every second Thursday of the month. A hangout for people taking control of their home energy usage and generation. We use open-source hardware and software to gain a better understanding of energy in our homes\, how to make the best use of the energy we generate and reduce energy wasted. \nCatch up on [some of our previous sessions and presentations](https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLiz1gBPXWVAJ4hzg3zj72hVrXVJgWvzOG). \nUnless there’s a specific title to the session\, it means we have no scheduled speaker and it will be an open session. SUMMARY:EcoHome Lab: Using CO2 data to quantify ventilation rate
DESCRIPTION:*** \nWe are extremely pleased to be joined by Dr. Jess Few (UCL) and Trystan Lea (Open Energy Monitor) to discuss the potential of CO2 sensing to quantify ventilation rates in domestic properties. \nJess – is now a Research Fellow specialising in UK household energy consumption\, but during her PhD she developed a method for measuring ventilation rates in occupied homes\, based on the tracer gas decay technique. As part of the research she developed algorithms to identify periods when a dwelling is unoccupied and then identify and analyse periods of CO2 decay for ventilation rate analysis – this code is all released under an open source license. \nTrystan – Is co-founder of Megni & OEM\, who not only builds a variety of tools to model\, plan and measure domestic decarbonisation but uses his own house as a case study. For the last few months Trystan has been experimenting with adding CO2 tracking to his monitoring system to track air change rates within Emoncms. He’ll take us through his results so far and how others might replicate it. \nThis is a really live area of research and exploration\, so there will be plenty of time for discusssion\, if you’re working on your own experiments please do come along and share your findings. \nIn our regular monthly slot – every second Thursday of the month – EHL is a hangout for people taking control of their home energy usage and generation. We use open-source hardware and software to gain a better understanding of energy in our homes\, how to make the best use of the energy we generate and reduce energy wasted. \n**Catch up** on some of our previous sessions and presentations. \nThis is a [Carbon Co-op](https://carbon.coop/) initiative\, working closely with OpenEnergyMonitor and others that work to code us a better world. \n**Regular EHL topics include:** \n• Home energy monitoring. \n• House energy performance assessment \n• Sensors – electricity\, gas\, temperature\, humidity\, air quality… \n• User interfaces\, dashboards \n• Smart houses and automation \n• Aggregation of data sources \n• Taking the power back! – Making better use of the surplus power we generate \n**Who is it for?** \n• Anyone with skills in physical electronics\, web development\, data analysis or programming who wants to use that knowledge to reduce energy and carbon!

The event features a celebratory meal and social\, hosted at the International Anthony Burgess Foundation in central Manchester. \nAgenda\nMembers present and apologies\nMinutes of last meeting\nReport on the year & Future Plans\nAppointment of Auditor resolution\n“Proposal to dis-apply the requirement to appoint an auditor in line with the Co-operative and Community Benefit Societies Act 2014.”\nBoard Election \nBoard papers\nBoard Papers\n2023 Minutes \nCarbon Co-op Accounts\nTake a look at a brief statement of accounts: \nStatement of Accounts \nBoard Members standing for election \nMeet the potential board members who’ve put themselves forward as member representatives for 2024/25\nDr Chris Jones – “I’m a Knowledge Exchange Fellow at Manchester University’s Tyndall Centre for Climate Change Research. I’d like to continue as a board member to support the great work of Carbon Coop and feed in insights and opportunities from the University sector that might support that work.” \nJonathan Atkinson – staff member\, Director – “As a co-founder and long-standing board member I have extensive experience and insight into the sector and policy developments around the low carbon transition. I’d like to continue in the role and be an advocate for collective\, co-operative solutions.” \nDr Lloyd Hamilton – “I have a background in research\, innovation and applied sciences\, most notably in biological and biochemical sciences and my day job involves reducing the environmental impact on skin and hair. In 2017\, we started to renovating our home\, utilising some assistance with contacts and information from Carbon Coop. We have addressed fabric and are incorporated smart tech and measurements\, with a future eye on renewables. I’d be happy to continue and share my limited knowledge and skills with others making the retrofit journey.” \nMatt Fawcett – staff member\, Director – “I’ve been involved in Carbon Co-op and involved in steering the organisation since before we were constituted. Most of my working life has been in the co-operative sector and I’ve been involved as a founder or board member of 6 co-operatives / social enterprises which are still operating in the city. I’d like to continue in my role to help maintain the organisation memory.” \nPeter Livesey – “I’ve been a board member since 2019\, I’ve had a long career running my own business and providing services to financial service organisations. I’m keen to continue supporting Carbon Co-op’s work.” \nMichael Hemingway – “I support the Carbon Co-op model\, working with like-minded people at grass roots level to bring about change. I am a longstanding member of the board and would like to continue in this role.” \nEddie Sheehy – “My home was retrofitted in 2014 with the scheme fully planned and delivered by Carbon Coop. The planned reductions of at least 40% in energy consumption has been achieved and exceeded. This has ensured that my carbon footprint has fallen significantly as well. I worked as a lecturer in education in Manchester and was also a Councillor in Salford for 15 years. In that time\, I have helped set up a number of groups and many are working on environmental and community projects to this day. Over the last few years I have devoted time to helping set up carbon reduction and solar energy schemes in my local area.” \nChris Medrano – “I have c35 years experience in the social housing sector. I’m really interested in the work that the carbon co-op do\, put simply it is the future. Whilst RSL’s have been improving homes and reducing reliance on carbon\, I do not think it is moving quickly enough\, for our customers or for our planet. We are making headway on new builds to higher specification\, but retrofit is much more difficult. I’d like the opportunity to explore and better understand what the blockages are from all perspectives and be part of a team trying to resolve these issues so that this type of essential work becomes mainstream.” \nRichard Amos – “I have self-built an AECB level retrofit on my own property and have significant technical and practical knowledge in this area. I also work for a startup specialising in corporate sustainability and have considerable interest in policy/system driven change. I would like to hep provide my experience and skills in helping define pragmatic but impactful ways to help retrofitting in a sustainable way that grows the skillset of trades and takes it out of the realm of only being truly possible with (a lot of) money\, or (a lot of) personal time.” \nGraham Lock – “My business runs the UK’s largest retrofit network and stages regional retrofits summits across the UK. I’m very interested in the Carbon Coop model and am keen to learn more about it\, but also to see who it might inspire others across the UK. I am also at the early stage of considering setting up a local retrofit community where I live in the West Midlands\, so it will also help me understand the challenges and pitfalls of embarking on that journey.” \nChristopher Price – “I have experience working on the UK & EU regulatory roadmap\, my day job with Knauf focuses on the technical side of insulation and I also sit on the Passivhaus Trust technical committee. I’ve been a member for some time and have been meaning to get a bit closer to the activity of the carbon co-op and take advantage of the wealth of knowledge available to members. This seems like a way to do that and contribute something back. I hope my career in social housing\, climate education and insulation manufacturing puts me in a place to contribute a different but complimentary perspective.” \nChristina Brooks – “I believe in retrofit and being able to support people to live in green homes and use them correctly. Reducing our carbon footprint is beneficial to us all.” \nHarriet Harper – “I’m an experienced project manager and am proud to have worked in the Zero Carbon Team at Salford City Council. I’m passionate about the power of people to come together to solve problems\, like climate change\, by drawing on the skills and experience of each-other. I know Carbon Co-op are doing great work across Greater Manchester to engage people and empower them to make changes in their own homes and communities\, while working with councils to support their zero carbon ambitions. I’d be delighted to help support this.”

SUMMARY:EcoHome Lab: Calculating Metered Energy Savings (MES) from retrofit
DESCRIPTION:*** \nThis session will focus on the latest work on the development of [Metered Energy Savings](https://carbon.coop/2024/02/retrometer-project-why-metered-energy-savings/) (MES) methodologies to calculate the impact of energy efficiency interventions in the UK. MES approaches compare energy usage post-retrofit with a “counterfactual” – the energy the household *would have used* in the same period had the retrofit not happened. \nWe’re pleased to be joined by **Connor Galbraith\, Data Scientist at [Energy Systems Catapult](https://es.catapult.org.uk/project/retrometer/)** who has been leading the work on how this Counterfactual is generated in the recent [RetroMeter](https://es.catapult.org.uk/project/retrometer/) project. The work draws extensively on work done internationally via LF Energy’s [OpenEEMeter](https://lfenergy.org/projects/openeemeter/) project. \nRegular attendees will be familiar with MES approaches from our previous sessions on [CalTRACK/OpenEEmeter](https://www.meetup.com/eco-home-lab-manchester/events/282990686/) and the launch of Carbon Co-op’s own MES web tool\, [PowerShaper Tracker](https://tracker.powershaper.io/). \nConnor will be discussing: \n* How the models work\n* In what circumstances different models can be used\n* The performance (accuracy\, bias) of different models\n* Data sources and data accessibility issues for data needed for different models \n——————————————————— \nCatch up on [some of our previous sessions and presentations](https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLiz1gBPXWVAJ4hzg3zj72hVrXVJgWvzOG). \nEcoHome Lab is a [Carbon Co-op](https://carbon.coop/) initiative\, often working together with [OpenEnergyMonitor](https://openenergymonitor.org). \nTopics will include: \n• Home energy monitoring. \n• House energy performance assessment \n• Sensors – electricity\, gas\, temperature\, humidity\, air quality… \n• User interfaces\, dashboards \n• Smart houses and automation \n• Aggregation of data sources \n• Taking the power back! – Making better use of the surplus power we generate \n**Who is it for?** \n• Anyone with skills in physical electronics\, web development or programming who wants to use that knowledge to reduce energy and carbon!
