Pay: £30,100 FTE + pension contributions
Employment: PAYE (though freelance/consultancy basis may be considered). 
Location: Manchester office based though remote working considered

Carbon Co-op (https://carbon.coop) is an award-winning and fast-growing not-for-profit social enterprise based in Greater Manchester, UK. We pilot innovative low carbon projects and provide support services to our householder members and the wider community.

We are recruiting a Business Development Manager to oversee the development of replication and consultancy services associated with our People Powered Retrofit service. The post is a short term hire with the expectation of extension based on sales and/or grant funding success. 

No construction industry experience is necessary but you will require an entrepreneurial background (ideally co-operative or social enterprise) with experience of consultancy work, and preferably social franchise replication.

Purpose of the role

People Powered Retrofit is an end to end consumer facing service for householders interested in retrofitting their homes. Based in Greater Manchester, there is significant interest in replicating some or all of the elements of the service elsewhere and in working with other bodies and organisations on a consultancy basis to share the learning and expertise generated in the project. Clients for consultancy work include local authorities, Community Energy groups, Local Enterprise Partnerships, combined authorities and regional government. 

The role will involve close collaboration with co-project managers Jonathan Atkinson of Carbon Co-op and Marianne Heaslip of URBED and work with People Powered Retrofit’s growing interdisciplinary service delivery team. 

The role will encompass two main areas:

  • Securing and managing consultancy contracts and developing grant funding bids
  • Building the social franchise infrastructure necessary for replication ie business planning, commissioning legal agreements, overseeing replication. 

Qualifications

None: the emphasis for this role is on worked experience

Skills and experience

Essential

  • Experience of Business Planning for new or existing income generating operations i.e. products or services, or entire companies ie devising income/expenditure spreadsheets, outlining areas of income generation, building business plans.
  • Experience of Business Development, again with regards to income generating operations or companies, ie strategic development, building partnerships, iteratively developing business areas.
  • Experience of carrying out consultancy-based work or working within a fee earning company i.e. fee proposal development, management of consultancy projects, issuing contracts, client management etc.
  • Excellent communications skills and the ability to articulate complex ideas in a way that is understandable and meaningful for fee paying clients. 
  • Proficient in use of spreadsheets to assist in project and business planning.

Desirable

  • Bid writing in order to secure grant funding or other investment.
  • Experience of, or expertise within, social franchise replication
  • Experience of raising capital via Social Finance ie Social Enterprise loans, Community Shares issues etc. 
  • Project Management experience and/or relevant qualification 
  • Management experience within a trading social enterprise business.
  • Experience of marketing and comms operations 
  • Experience of working within the Community Energy, Co-operative and/or Social Enterprise sectors 

Person specification

Essential

  • (Socially) entrepreneurial, able to identify and exploit income generating opportunities. 
  • A good understanding of social enterprise concepts, ie trading for social purposes.
  • Comfortable in a fee earning, consultancy environment.
  • Collaborative and a good team member.
  • Empathetic and able to understand and manage client needs. 
  • Good at prioritisation of multiple, competing projects. 
  • Excellent attention to detail.

Desirable 

  • An interest in climate change and the built environment 

Our working culture

We practice teams-based, self management working and this role sits within Carbon Co-op’s Retrofit Team. We try to keep a healthy working environment: we take mental health seriously, and most of us work less than five full days a week. We’re egalitarian, with everyone on the same full-time equivalent salary. We have 33 days of flexible holidays a year (incl bank holidays), plus 27th December – 31st December inclusive.
